Kunsthalle Krems - Vision & Mission
Instead of a mere „art container“, a platform for encounters. That's how Florian Steininger, the new director of Kunsthalle Krems, describes the future of the art institution. We met Florian Steininger at the Kunsthalle Krems during the time of refurbishment of the art space and took a look into the future.
Since July 2016, Florian Steininger is artistic director of the Kunsthalle Krems. Steininger, an art historian who had worked as a curator at the Bank Austria Kunstforum, is head curator of the Hubert Looser private collection in Zurich as well.
The Kunsthalle, which is a part of the Krems art mile between the historic center of Krems and the medieval old town of Stein, will focus on the art of the 20th and 21st century, according to Steininger’s conception.
Since its opening in 1995, the Kunsthalle has focused on several periods of art history including classical modernism and the 19th century. Now it will re-focus on contemporary art, with an international orientation and a wide variety of offers.
The intention is to make the Kunsthalle an art space that will provide a wide range of experiences for the visitors and enable artists to show their work in a different way. As there are no obligations towards any collection of its own, the exhibition conception remains flexible, and cooperations with important private collections - like the afore mentioned Hubert Looser collection - will offer perspectives of comprehensive thematic exhibitions.
In this setting, director Florian Steininger has the possibility to present contemporary Austrian art in an international context.
The first exhibiton after the ongoing remodelling will be „Abstract Painting Now“ in July 2017, where a third of the art on display will be contributions of Austrian artists. (written by Cem Angeli)
