On the basis of works combining painting with wax, Robert Pan developed his very own artistic style, bringing it to perfection. He mostly uses high grade artificial resin. An artist’s portrait by CastYourArt.
Robert Pan comes from sculpting. His paintings are not exclusively only conceived by pictorial principles of applying layers, they rather receive their form through the sculptural principle of removing material.
The composition in monochrome resin layers usually takes several years. On an artistic level it is therefore not a moment – a sudden inspiration- feeding his art but, on the contrary, the ability to compose long-term, in time layers or in fact to operate historically. Because of the overlaps in the layers, his works gain a spatial depth we usually see in paintings only.
By removing material, countless island of colour develop in the image areas, they are occurrences from deeper layers. Even if the things we see in his works seem abstract at first, there are still hints to familiar forms and images.
The countless colour points for example remind of stellar constellations or images of galaxies. Picture titles like “galaxy” or “constellation” show that Robert Pan searches for such allusions to the universe, to spatial and temporal infinity, but also to order and potential connections. At the same time, an immediate beauty, as the one of a starry sky, is an important force in his works. We can simply enjoy this beauty but it also challenges us to come closer and to plunge deeper into the pictorial space - then one becomes a traveller, and that is also part of their power.
