Consumer culture, popular culture, and the commodification of all aspects of life, these are the counterparts to that art movement which emerged in the United States in the 1960s under the name "Pop Art", aiming to supplant abstract painting. The artists of this new direction - Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Mel Ramos, and others - took everything as their inspiration that could be replicated through media and thus gain fame through popularity - whether it be soup cans, dictators, or cars.
In the first of its three opening exhibitions, the Albertina Klosterneuburg focuses on the art of that time, exemplifies successors who have further developed this direction, and makes room for the Austrian version of Pop, which is characterized above all by irony, humor, and a critical spirit.
