Whether the artistic gaze reaches far back into the history of humanity or focuses on the recent past, it always encounters, alongside the beautiful, the cruel inflicted upon or endured by humans.

The third opening exhibition of the Albertina Klosterneuburg showcases art that lays bare the incomprehensible cruelty of our existence. Whether it's the stone that Sisyphus must endlessly roll up the mountain, symbolizing perpetual human tragedy, or the sculpture of a tortured prisoner by US soldiers in the Iraqi prison Abu Ghraib, by British artist Marc Quinn, emblematic of the very real violence of our time.

This is an exhibition that - perhaps somewhat unusually for this institution - also presents art that addresses the painful.
