ARAKI. "first-person photography“ at the Albertina Modern

Many art lovers associate the name of photographer Nobuyoshi Araki (*1940) primarily with pornographic images of bondage, of sex and of bondage sex. Walter Moser, curator of the Araki exhibition at the Albertina Modern, puts his focus on Araki's "first-person photography", which – as Walter Moser states – was his main contribution to photography.  

FRANZ HUBMANN. Artist portraits. The Helmut Klewan donation

From Pablo Picasso to Andy Warhol, from Oskar Kokoschka to Arnulf Rainer, the photographer Franz Hubmann took portraits of them all. Recently the collector and former gallerist Helmut Klewan donated more than hundred works by Franz Hubmann to the Albertina Museum in Vienna. Now they are on view in the current exhibition "Franz Hubmann. Artist portraits. The Helmut Klewan donation."

AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Presenting about 200 works from the 1930s up to 2000 the Albertina Museum in Vienna has one of the biggest exhibition of american photography on display in Europe. The show, curated by Walter Moser and co-curator Anna Hanreich, presents with its extraordinary works a divers and also contradictorily country.

TATIANA BILBAO ESTUDIO

The exhibition on the work of Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao (*1972 in Mexico City) at the Architekturzentrum Wien shows that it is possible to combine sustainable and socially committed architecture with high aesthetic standards.

HUBERT SCHEIBL. Seeds of Time

Hubert Scheibl currently has a solo exhibition dedicated to him in the Albertina's Basteihalle. Under the title "Seeds of Time," earlier works are exhibited together with entirely new series and - for the first time in Austria - objects. In our Film Albertina director Klaus Albrecht Schröder and curator Antonia Hoerschelmann guide us through the exhibition and afterwards we follow a talk of Klaus Albrecht Schröder with the artist in his studio.

SCHIELE AND HIS LEGACY

Starting with 21 self-portraits by Egon Schiele the current Albertina Modern exhibition "Schiele and his Legacy" asks for the impact of Schiele's oeuvre on contemporary art. Curated by Elisabeth Dutz we will find aspects of Schiele's art in the work of Arnulf Rainer and the Vienna Actionism as well as in the drawings of Maria Lassnig or artworks of Baselitz, Sherman and many more.

MODIGLIANI. The Primitivist Revolution

The Albertina museum dedicates its new exhibition to Amadeo Modigliani, the mysterious loner among the avant-gardists of the early 20th century. Not only great artworks by Modigliani and his colleagues Picasso, Brancusi, Derain and others are shown in this exhibition but the exhibition also follows the idea that archaic and non-european art had a big impact on the avant-gard artists of this time.  The exhibition was curated by Marc Restellini and Gunhild Bauer.

MIRJAM BAKER. Staub

TITIAN. Beauty – Love – Poetry

The images of women by Titian and his Venetian contemporaries of the sixteenth century take center stage at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in its anniversary show on the occasion of its 130th anniversary. Not only magnificent works by Titian, Tintoretto, Giorgione, and many others are on view, also the reasons for the emergence of a new image of women at the beginning of the sixteenth century will be made tangible.

THE 80S. Art of the Eighties

After conceptual art and other theory-heavy art movements of the 1960s and 70s, the 1980s are usually regarded in art history as the decade of the rediscovery of painting. Now the Albertina Modern presents in its show "THE 80s" which is curated by Angela Stief the art of this decade and while visiting you will not only see works of all the major artists but also realize how much this decade and its artistic inventions influenced our time.

REBECCA HORN

Guns spitting blood; wailing voices from a field of rubble, little hammers hacking at their own image; feathers slowly turning, a mercury flow forming ever new shapes: Rebecca Horn is one of the most versatile conceptual artists of her generation. The Bank Austria Kunstforum in Vienna is dedicating her the first comprehensive exhibition of her work in Austria in 30 years.

PAUL FLORA. Drawings

Many of us know Paul Flora as a caricaturist of the german weekly newspaper "Zeit" where he published thousands of his caricatures, but he saw himself more as a draftsman than a caricaturist. Now the Albertina in Vienna opened a comprehensive retrospective of his drawing-oeuvre.

LETIZIA WERTH. Talking Rooms

Letizia Werth is inspired by Sigmund Freud's rooms in Berggasse in Vienna in her latest series of large-scale works. These works, made with graphite and ink on canvas, are on view for the first time at Galerie C.A. Contemporary in Vienna.

Die Fotografin Lee Miller wurde mit 35 eine der wenigen weiblichen Kriegsfotografen und kam im zweiten Weltkrieg zusammen mit den Alliierten nach Deutschland. Dort fotografierte sie den Horror des Krieges und des Holocaust. Eine weltberühmte Aufnahme aus dieser Zeit zeigt sie in Hitlers Badewanne.
